Did you know that 420 – now the most commonly-known and widely-accepted cannabis holiday – rose to popularity about 40 years before folks knew exactly where it came from?
How It (Supposedly) Started
710 Day’s beginning contains even more mystery. Despite the appearance of “710” in the Urban Dictionary as early as 2010 and then in prominent publications (including LA Weekly, High Times, and International Business Times) by 2013, we’re not totally sure where this cannabis holiday originates.[1]
Some reckon that 710 must have come up in private conversations between industry leaders decades ago: perhaps they were bemoaning 420’s mainstream status and wished for a new holiday devoted entirely to dabbing.
As reported by Mitchell Colbert in The Leaf Online, underground rapper TaskRok suggested July 10 – 7/10 – as the ideal celebration date. To cement it, TaskRok and Linus Stubbs released a new album, entitled The Movement, on July 10, 2011, featuring tracks such as “Boil That Oil” and “7:10.”
Why 710 = Oil Day
One simple explanation is that when you type 710 into a calculator and turn it upside down, it spells out OIL.[2] That doesn’t quite explain how the term got associated with cannabis oils, though.
Perhaps time and deeper investigation will tell – or perhaps the origins of 710, like many aspects of modern cannabis culture, will fade into the back of our minds with growing acceptance of this holiday’s significance.
