How a music legend was born
Willie Nelson was born on April 29, 1933 in Abbott, Texas. His family was originally from Arkansas but moved to Texas for work. His parents abandoned him and his siblings when they were young and they were raised by their grandparents.
When he was 6, his grandfather gave Willie his first guitar and taught him a few chords. That was the beginning of the making of a music legend. He performed extensively throughout his childhood at church, community events, dance halls, taverns and honky tonks.
After high school, Willie had a short stint in the U.S. Air Force. He dropped out of college to work as a radio deejay across stations in Texas while continuing to perform and write songs. He released his first album in 1956 but failed to achieve commercial and critical success until the 70s when his unique style of country, jazz and folk was embraced by the burgeoning hippie music scene.
To date, Willie Nelson has released a total of 152 albums and won multiple Grammy and AMA awards throughout his legendary career.
A voice for cannabis legalization
Willie Nelson has made no attempts to shy away from his love of cannabis culture. He has stated before in interviews how marijuana had ‘saved his life’ by helping him kick his alcohol addiction.
